Accident victims should never be put off seeking compensation merely because they are advanced in years. In one case, a man aged in his 70s whose autumn years were blighted by injuries suffered when he was knocked off his bicycle by a negligent driver received close to a million pounds in damages.
The pensioner was cycling through a seaside town early in the morning when a motorist drove over the centre of a mini roundabout and collided with him. Due to the brain and orthopaedic injuries he sustained, he continues to suffer cognitive difficulties, balance issues and a painful left shoulder. Thanks to the devoted support of his family, however, he has managed to remain living in his own home.
After proceedings were launched on the pensioner’s behalf, the motorist’s insurers agreed to settle his claim for a £950,000 lump sum. The money will be used to fund his care and case management so that he can, so far as possible given his limitations, enjoy the rest of his life. In approving the settlement, the High Court noted that his family had really stepped up in caring for him since the accident.
