The tragic deaths of four miners in South Wales has led to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) bringing criminal charges against the owners of the mine under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.
The CPS concluded that the failure to ensure a safe system of working for the miners was a gross breach of the duty of care owed by the company to its employees and that the manager of the mine should also be charged with gross negligence manslaughter.
Both have pleaded not guilty and the trial is scheduled to be heard in March 2014.
